Lesson 1 - Greeting

Friends and family members greet each other with a simple "Привет".

for those who want to 'Copy'+'Paste' :

- Привет, Эмили.
- Привет, мам.

Use "Здравствуйте" with people you barely know, with much older folks (unless they are your relatives) or with government officials.

- Здравствуйте, мисс Наталия.
- Здравствуй, Эмили.

Remember, "Practice makes perfect".

Your e-mails with questions and comments are welcome.

If you are brave enough, you can e-mail me an audio file with your greeting in Russian. I'll play it on the next show.

    Hi Natalia,

I'm very excited about this program. I just started studying Russian in France, but pedagogical methods are a little new, and I'm so glad to have found a way to do some daily practice and learning on my own terms. I have a question. Does one really not pronounce the "B" (V) sound after the "a"? I noticed in your phonetic transcription you didn't include it. Thanks!

  4. Kavita, in your question ''Does one really not pronounce the "B" (V) sound after the "a"? I noticed in your phonetic transcription you didn't include it" I assume you are talking about the word 'здравствуйте'. That's correct. 'в' is not pronounced.

Great show, but any chance you could spell out your words phonetically on your site so that I could improve my pronunciation?

  9. @Eddie: You will improve your pronunciation by learning the sounds of Russian alphabet (download them here: http://homepage.mac.com/n.a.t/russian/FileSharing8.html )

...and then trying to read the words I use in my lessons, while listening to my voice in the podcast episode.

Trust me, it's going to be hard at first, but you will start reading in Russian soon!

  11. What is the differences between
    "Здравствуйте" and "Здравствуй" ?

    Regards,

    Turkay

  12. Turkay,

    the differences between
"Здравствуйте" and "Здравствуй" is "Formal" vs "Informal" address.

    Всего доброго!

I have seen some different alphabets that have different ways of pronouncing some of the letters. Just wondering if your way was the only way or if there are different ways to pronounce letters.

  17. GUS, what 'different alphabets' are you talking about?

Well i have seen other sites that have different pronunciations for some of the letters. Like for the "o" it has it as o as in folk not the a sound you have it as.

  20. Gus, I'd be interested to see the 'other sites' you are talking about and check them out.

    Thanks.

Ok. The address of the one that I found is http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/track/7635/alphabet.html

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gus, after looking around that site, I got a feeling English is not this man's forte. I also found other mistakes in the alphabet's examples. One has to know both Russian AND English phonetics in order to give suitable corresponding sounds.

  23. Natalia!

I just found your podcast and I am very excited! I live in Azerbaijan and often, the dialect and small changes in the Russian pronunciation makes it very difficult to learn unadulterated Russian. I hope to learn enough that my trips throughout Baku and Tbilisi will make it easier to move around!

    Thank you!
